Faculty Spotlight
Get to Know José Barral, MD, PhD
Dr. José Barral, MD, PhD, combines his passion for biochemistry and neuroscience with award-winning educational expertise as Inaugural Chair and Professor of Biomedical Science. Trained at the Max Planck Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, and ITESM, Mexico, Dr. Barral has conducted research regarding protein folding and neurodegenerative disorders, which has been funded by multiple institutes and foundations and published in journals such as Nature and Science. He has been recognized for his teaching excellence with numerous honors, including membership in the University of Texas Shine Academy and multiple ‘Best Teacher’ Awards. Dr. Barral brings additional expertise as a former Director of UTMB’s MD-PhD Program and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at its Graduate School.

The Office of Academic and Community Affairs convenes a nominating committee to identify faculty candidates for local, regional, and national awards. The Office sponsors an annual celebration of faculty awards and promotions.

Admissions Committee
The Admissions Committee makes final admission decisions on applicants and provides reports and updates on admissions throughout the school year.
Advisory Committee on Appointments and Promotions (ACAP)
The ACAP advises the Dean on faculty appointments and promotions.
Curriculum and Education Policy Committee (CEP)
The CEP designs, implements, manages, and assesses the school’s curriculum and ensures that it reflects our mission, vision, and values and fully complies with licensing and accreditation standards.
Learning Environment and Professionalism Committee (LEAP)
LEAP sets and monitors professional behavior standards for faculty, students, administrators, staff, and others in the school’s learning environment.
Student Progress and Promotions Committee (SPPC)
The SPPC monitors and assesses the academic standing of students and collaborates with the CEP on the school's Academic Rules and Regulations.
Program Evaluation, Assessment, and Improvement Committee (PEAI)
The PEAI collects and reviews data assessing all dimensions of the school’s performance, then recommends quality and curricular improvements as appropriate.
Faculty Governance
The Faculty Assembly will meet at least once a year to evaluate the state of the curriculum and other issues brought forward by the membership. The Assembly will elect a representative executive body that will meet throughout the year to provide feedback to the Dean and senior leadership regarding topics of relevance to the medical education program. The representative executive body will propose nominations to the Dean for faculty committee membership and facilitate elections for committee service.

The Office of Academic and Community Affairs is dedicated to driving change in medical education through community engagement and by ensuring equity, inclusion, and diversity are at the foundation of all our initiatives and programs. It also provides resources for faculty and their academic career development, including management of appointments and promotions, and identifying opportunities to develop as scholars and catalysts for change.
