Dr. Abbas Hyderi joined Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine from the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine, where he served as an Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, with principal oversight of all four years of the curriculum. His prior roles encompassed Associate Program Director for the UIC Family Medicine Residency, Co-Chair of the UIC Strategic Planning Task Force on interprofessional education, Chair of the UIC Curriculum Transformation Task Force, and UIC’s team leader for the prestigious Association of American Medical Colleges Core Entrustable Professional Activities pilot. He has expertise in team-based learning (TBL™) and competency-based education and has composed over 100 peer-reviewed presentations and publications in medical education. He has received numerous awards including the 2010 Illinois Academy of Family Physicians Teacher of the Year Award and the 2016 UIC College of Medicine Emerging Innovator Award. Upon graduating medical school, UIC created the Abbas Hyderi Leadership Award that is still given annually to two students per class. He authored, and then helped advocate for the passage of, Oregon House Bill 2706, which allowed opt-out HIV testing for pregnant women. He plans to provide outpatient care to patients at risk for, and living with, HIV at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center (LAMC).
